Mexico gives to the UN a painting by Manuel Felguerez

United Nations, Sep. 20 -2018(Notimex).- The Mexican government gave to the United Nations (UN) a mural-sized painting by Mexican artist Manuel Felguerez, which was placed in its headquarters in New York to commemorate the approval of the agenda for the development towards the year 2030.

At the beginning of the so-called corridor of flags, which leads to the plenary hall of the UN General Assembly, the abstract painting was placed, entitled “Agenda 2030”.

The 2030 agenda of the UN refers to the Sustainable Development Goals that are proposed, among its main goals, to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger in the world in a period of 12 years.

The painting, with a size of five by two meters, would be unveiled officially next week by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, according to diplomats assigned to the UN.

Peña Nieto will offer his speech to the plenary of the General Assembly on Tuesday, September 26, in addition to holding a series of meetings that have not yet been disclosed by the mission of Mexico to the UN.

The painter and sculptor Felguerez, born in the central state of Zacatecas in 1928 and creditor of the National Arts Prize in 1988, is considered a pioneer of abstract art in Mexico and a prominent representative of the so-called Generation of the Rupture.

Felguerez’s painting is added to another of Mexico’s gifts to the UN headquarters: the mural by Oaxacan artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991), entitled “Fraternidad”, presented to this international organization in 1968.

The headquarters of the UN is decorated with hundreds of artistic works donated to the international organization by its member states.
